“Who Is This Man?”

Mark 4:35–41 KJV 1900
And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Chapter 4 begins with Jesus and a multitude beside a sea, with Jesus teaching 3 parables:
- The Parable of Soil & Sower
(1) some fell on wayside, (2) some fell on stony ground, (3) some fell in thorns, (4) some fell in good soil.
- Parable of the Lamp (nothing is kept secret)
some fell on stony ground
- Parable of Seed rising from the ground on its own
- Parable of the Mustard seed
the kingdom of Heaven will grow!!
Jesus taught in parables to the crowd, but broke them down and explained them to His disciples.
The Word was taught, the Word ceased the storm, the Word changed a man’s life!

A Parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.

verses 33-34 - As Jesus taught, He used parables, and then later explained them all to His disciples so they could clearly understand.
After a long day of teaching, preaching, Jesus asked them to get in a boat, send the multitude away and go to the other side.
Jesus said the Word and the storm around them stopped.

Jesus’ Word should strengthened our faith.

Is Jesus’ Word strengthening your faith right now?

Outline:
tonight I want you to notice three great things that happen in this story:

1. The Great Storm

verses 1, 33-38
Jesus just spent time preaching and teaching about the Kingdom of God, and now they are on their way to a new place for more ministry.
Jesus used this time to rest as you can see from what we read, but look how this develops.
Before the storm actually happened, notice this:

The disciples got on a boat with Jesus “as He was.”

We need to be people that get on boat with who Jesus is, not what we think Jesus is all about.
They got in a boat going to the country of the Gadarenes. The disciples didn’t know that they were about to go into a storm, but they spent enough time with Jesus at this point to know that He was going to be on mission.

a)

b) As Jesus Was

c)

being on mission doesn’t mean things will always be peachy, but it does mean that we are on the same team with the King of Kings that can bring peace in any storm.
Let’s reach every lost soul in this community! Let’s reach every lost soul in this world for the glory of GOD!

2. The Great Calm

verses 39-40
The disciples woke Jesus up - not the wind, not the storm, not the worries He might have had. The disciples woke Him up!
They questioned Him, “Do you care that WE perish?”
Jesus stood up, rebuked the wind, said “peace be still, and the storm stopped!”
Let this sink in for a second… He stopped nature!
“… and there was a great calm.”
but notice what He says to His disciples:
“how is it that ye have no faith?”
This statement is significant, “no faith.”
When are there times in my life when I have “no faith?”

a) When I Let Fear Control Me

let’s not give the disciples that hard of a time, because the truth is this storm was bad.
the wind beat the ship, the waves came into the boat.
They had fear! It’s okay to have fears sometimes, but when those fears control the way you respond or react, that’s when it becomes dangerous.
illustration: I’m fearful of that lost and found rack in the office up here.
if I saw that and then ran to the office and said, “Theres a big scary male (or female) in the SS office and I need you to call 911.” that’s when it becomes dangerous.

When fear is in control, it costs you something, it is humiliating, and you lose credibility.

b) When I Don’t Trust God’s Word

verse 38 - “Master, do you not care?”
back up to verse 35 - “let us pass over unto the otherside.”
it’s not like Jesus said, “Hey boys, let’s get in this boat and MAYBE we’ll get lucky and not sink.”

c) When I Accuse Jesus of Not Caring

verse 38 - Two things should stand out here:
they said, “WE” - they were calling Jesus out of being indifferent toward the storm.
almost say, “We figured You would at least care about yourself!”
“Perish” - they had already made their minds up that they were dying.

d) When I Forget the Big Picture

God didn’t send Jesus to drown in a storm.
Tonight read , and see what happened. Jesus was on mission to seek and save that which was lost!
The disciples forgot the big picture.
Let me say that again, Jesus didn’t come to drown in a sea, but to drown our sins in a sea of forgetfulness!
“You drown our sins in seas of crimson.” - sea of crimson (Shane & Shane)
Jesus calmed the storm, and taught His disciples a huge lesson in the process.

3. The Great Reaction

4. The Awe

verse 41 -
verse 41 -
The disciples asked the question: “who is this man?” and I love that Mark records that… because ole Mark begins to answer that for us through the rest of his account of Jesus’ life.
Mark records for us who Jesus is:
a. Jesus is Healer of demons, long time illnesses, and death in chapter 5
b. He’s a feeder of 5,000 and walker on water in Chapter 6
c. He’s a teacher, and says everywhere he went, He couldn’t be hid.
He reaches out to those not like Him
He puts His hands on deaf ears, and opens them.
He decided that 5,000 wasn’t enough so He went and fed another 4,000 people in and none went without.
He opened blind eyes, and was transfigured into all of His glory in .
He blesses the little children, He prophesied what none had ever done before about Himself.
He’s the Son of God that came to this earth to die for you and me so that we can have life!!!
These men went on to find out just who Jesus was, and could you imagine their reaction to tell others not just WHAT He did, but WHO He was!
Do you know this man?
